Photoshoots vs Covers

Photographer: Craig McDean
Model: Jessica Stam
Covers: (from left to right) Vogue Nippon May 2006, Vogue Nippon April 2007.

Both Craig McDean, both Vogue Nippon covers, both (shockingly) Jessica Stam. Granted, these aren't the most artistically profound photographs but I felt it would be interesting to provide a comparison between cover shots with and without the print. While the pictures look (obviously) empty without the print, I find it welcoming to see the clarity of Jessica's expression without the constant distraction of bright, over-sized fonts.

oh god, I saw one of my favorite covers of all time on A&C without the text and it has pretty much ruined it for me XD. Mind you it's a Vogue Italia cover, a magazine that doesn't include much text anyway, but the absence of the word Vogue on top makes a HUGE difference somehow haha.

this obviously has nothing to do with Stam but um, it's a comment at least :D

Thank you for commenting. LOL.

I see what you mean but the words are usually so distracting. However, I find that VOGUE in big letters add a certain prestige even to a less than stellar picture.

I agree...I think it's a prestige thing :| I just realized that there's actually another reason I dislike the cover without the text - it's b/c the shot isn't as close either...so I retract my statement to an extent as the images aren't quite as identical as I assumed.

Oh, and I should just stop talking all vague and shit XD The cover I was talking about was Gemma's Vogue Italia cover from 2005...I think it's the April cover. She's eating a piece of fruit. THERE. No more mystery :P

Text can be really distracting particularly when there's so much of it. I wish most mags would take a hint from Vogue Italia and keep it minimal. The title is crucial of course, and maybe a phrase that encompasses the theme of the issue, but that's it! We don't need more than that dammit! *shakes fist*

I admit i prefer without writers of covers! The foto with the white dress is gorgeous! I want a "vogue Nippon" but it's hardly to find it in France!
